Workshop Registration

Joseph Cavalieri
"Narrative Stained Glass with Joseph Cavalieri"
June 2 - 6, 2025

Master stained-glass artist Joseph Cavalieri returns to teach his unique and detailed techniques of creating intricate stories through painted imagery on glass. The focus of the workshop is to learn and practice different methods of introducing painted elements into your projects. Enamels are painted on the glass surface, then kiln fired onto the glass.

In class, you will learn five processes, including airbrushing glass (using both atomizer and airbrush), pen-and-ink drawing, silk-screen printing using existing screens Joseph will bring, sandblasting, and painting directly onto the surface of the glass. There's no need to be an expert painter, as we will be tracing images in the class!

On the final day of class, each student will have the opportunity to copper foil and solder the panel together to make a finished stained glass piece about 14"x14". Great for beginners and those with experience working with stained glass who want to bring it to the next level. In addition to the finished panel, students will create many samples for their personal reference.

A framing and lighting system developed by Cavalieri will be shown in class, along with presentations on 'Art Residencies' and 'Marketing for Artists'.

Materials for participating and additional studio time are included.

About Joseph:

Joseph Cavalieri is an artist and educator living in Voulême, France. He was raised in New York. Painted stained glass has a powerful tradition that dates back to Medieval windows in cathedrals throughout Europe. Joseph Cavalieri's techniques use a similar process of painting and firing enamels on glass in a kiln, but he combines more modern processes with hand painting on glass including airbrushing, silk-screening, and penning to produce commissions and public art projects.

Joseph's work can be seen in the permanent collection of the Museum of Arts and Design, the Italian American Museum, the Leslie-Lohman Museum, the Stax Museum, and in the collections of two Simpson's writers in Los Angeles. Private and public art commissions include a MTA Arts for Transit public art installation at the Philipse Manor Train Station in New York, and Our Lady of Sorrow Church in Brazil.

Joseph has collaborated with illustrator R. Crumb. Cavalieri's teaching credentials include over 100 workshops in the USA, South America and Europe, including Corning Museum of Glass, Berlin Glas, Pilchuck, and Penland.

He has attended fifteen art residencies in the US, South America, Europe, Australia and India, and two more 2026 upcoming in Italy and China. In 2015 Cavalieri was invited to be the keynote speaker for the Glass Society of Ireland and NCAD Conference.
